Biography:
Jim Slaughter has been with Law Firm Carolinas since 2001 and serves as firm President. He regularly speaks on issues of real estate and community association law and has authored hundreds of HOA and condo articles. Jim was the first attorney in the Carolinas inducted as a Fellow into CAI’s College of Community Association Lawyers (CCAL) and served as CCAL’s 2014 national President. He was also the first North Carolina attorney recognized by Best Lawyers in the category of “Community Association Law.” Jim served for many years on the initial NC Bar Association Community Associations Committee and is past President of the NC Chapter of the Community Associations Institute. IAt the 2024 national Community Association Law Seminar, Jim received the Buck Lifetime Contribution Award, which recognizes attorneys who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the community association industry.
Jim is also a Certified Professional Parliamentarian-Teacher, Professional Registered Parliamentarian, and past President of the American College of Parliamentary Lawyers (ACPL). He has served as Parliamentarian to many of the largest associations in the country, including the AFL-CIO, NEA, AFT, ANA, LIUNA, SEIU, AFSCME, UFCW, NATCA, and others. Jim is author of four books on association meeting procedure, including two updated for the latest Robert's Rules of Order: Robert's Rules of Order Fast Track (a quick go-to guide that provides details on the most used motions, appropriate informal procedures for smaller boards, and general advice for shortening meetings) and Notes and Comments on Robert’s Rules, Fifth Edition (a user’s guide to Robert’s Rules that uses questions-and-answers to cover the most misused and asked-about provisions, including those that apply to larger membership meetings.) In addition to his professional work, Jim has led many civic and charitable organizations. He has been recognized annually by the Bar Association for his pro bono activities and by NC Lawyers Weekly as a past Leaders in the Law Honoree. The Governor of North Carolina has awarded Jim the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, one of the state's highest civilian honors. In 2023 Lawyers Weekly recognized Jim in its initial class of eleven "NC Legal Icons."
